An episiotomy is a cut made between the vaginal opening and the anus during childbirth. They used to be used (and are still sometimes used) as a way to “prevent severe tearing” in childbirth, but are not beneficial in doing so. ❌ Let’s look at some evidence on why episiotomies are no longer “standard”: In 1992, Dr. Michael Klein did a randomized trial and enrolled 703 low-risk mothers between 30-34 weeks.
