The land of Baklava & Turkish Delight: While origins of this delectable treat is hazy, it is fairly accepted that this came from the Assyrian empire, around 800 BC, where layers of bread dough were stretched thinly and baked with chopped nuts and honey. The Greeks were incredibly fond of this delicacy and are known to have created a thinner version of the dough (phyllo meaning leaf). The spice and silk routes had a great influence on this sweet in terms of flavouring - cardamom, rose water etc.
