Utah is home to 22 herds of wild horses that graze in desert plains and congregate at watering holes. These herds came into existence in the 1800s when domestic horses escaped from local ranchers and settled into lives of freedom. These mustangs soon came to be considered an indispensable part of Utah’s public lands.

Devoid of human residents, this is the land of wild horses: groups of mustang herds that live in the basins and foothills of Central Utah. There are 19 Herd Management Areas on nearly 2.5-million acres of public rangelands across Utah.

In the mountain peaks and sloping lowlands of western Utah roams a nationally recognized population of wild horses with a Utah heritage much older than most of ours. Many of these horses draw their bloodlines from the Colonial Spanish Horse, the first horses brought to America by the Spanish explorers in the 1500s.

Early settlers and the cavalry brought wild horses to the area in the late 1800s. Wild horses are usually gregarious and have few natural predators other than the occasional to mountain lions. Mares and stallions within the Onaqui Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA) have a slight to moderate build and average around 800 to 1000 pounds.

BLM Utah has placed 9,288 wild horses and burros into private care since 1971. Animals removed from public rangelands are offered to the public for adoption; unadopted animals are cared for on open pastures for the rest of their lives.
