One of only a couple of truly ocean-going shorebirds, Red Phalaropes flock with and closely resemble Red-necked Phalaropes. Look for Red Phalarope’s chunkier shape, thicker bill, and smooth, unstreaked gray back.</p>

The red phalarope or grey phalarope (Phalaropus fulicarius) is a small wader. This phalarope breeds in the Arctic regions of North America and Eurasia. It is migratory, and, unusually for a wader, migrates mainly on oceanic routes, wintering at sea on tropical oceans.

8" (20 cm). Spring female rich chestnut-red below, with white on face, yellow base of bill, buff back stripes. Male duller. Fall adults similar to Red-necked but smoother gray on back (without stripes), and have much thicker bill. Fall juveniles show more buff at first.

A brilliant red bird with a white face and yellow bill in summer, the Red Phalarope becomes a subdued gray-and-white speck on the open ocean in the nonbreeding season.

Breeds on Arctic tundra. Primarily found on the open ocean during migration and winter; rare inland. Usually in small flocks, but can gather in larger numbers, often in mixed flocks with Red-necked Phalarope. Red is best distinguished by larger size, thicker bill, and slightly paler, smoother-looking upperparts.

Red Phalaropes breed across the Arctic. They winter at sea in the open ocean, where they are most common in the Atlantic in the currents along the west coast of Africa from Morocco to Namibia. They’re also found in the Pacific in similar currents off California and Peru.
