Use any clean dry container or plastic wrap to collect stool sample. Open the hemoccult card by lifting the green tab underneath the name/address information. Use applicator stick to apply a THIN smear of stool to Box A. . Reuse applicator stick to obtain a second sample from a different part of the stool. Apply a THIN smear of stool to Box B.

To increase the probability of detecting occult blood, separate samples should be taken from two different sections of each fecal specimen. The collection date (as well as patient name and date of birth) should be printed on the card before it is returned to the lab.

If collecting multiple specimens, stool specimens should be collected on different days. Remove the occult blood card from the bag.
