Eastern Kentucky University (Eastern or EKU) is a public university in Richmond, Kentucky. It also maintains branch campuses in Corbin , Hazard , and Manchester and offers over 40 online undergraduate and graduate options.

The EKU mascot is The Colonel, and the school colors are maroon and white. While the women's teams were formerly known as the Lady Colonels, the school now emphasizes that all teams are now Colonels. The ASUN did not officially sponsor football until the 2022 season. [ 6 ]

Social fraternities and sororities also were added in the 1960s, and in 1963 the Kentucky Colonel became Eastern’s official mascot. Martin turned his attention next to academic development. Before we were known as “the Colonels,” Eastern athletes went by the moniker “The Maroons.” We were almost known as “The Leopards,” in an attempted mascot change during the 1920s. However, a plan to buy a leopard from a zoo in Memphis fell through, and we remained The Maroons until 1963.
