During Operation Arc Light (sometimes Arclight) from 1965 to 1973, the United States Air Force deployed B-52 Stratofortresses from bases in the U.S. Territory of Guam to provide battlefield air interdiction during the Vietnam War.

2023年1月4日 · U.S. aircraft participating in Linebacker II took off from three bases in the Pacific and five in Thailand on missions that converged over North Vietnam. The B-52 Stratofortress bombers flew from Guam and U-Tapao Royal Thai Navy Base.

On 22 November 1972, a B-52D (55-0110) from U-Tapao was hit by a surface-to-air missile (SAM) while on a raid over Vinh. The crew was forced to abandon the damaged aircraft over Thailand. This was the first B-52 to be destroyed by hostile fire in Vietnam.

In Operation Arc Light, B-52s bombed enemy targets across South Vietnam and into Cambodia, Laos and North Vietnam. Perhaps its best known missions of the war took place in December 1972 during Operation Linebacker II, when B-52 attacks eventually drove the North Vietnamese to successful peace talks.

2025年1月22日 · As part of "Defender II", the US Army Anderson Air Force Base (AFB) made 729 dispatches to 34 targets in North Vietnam. At the height of the Vietnam War, Anderson Air Force Base served more than 15,000 pilots, 153 B-52 bombers, and 20 support aircraft. The bombing operation was a success.
