The maned wolf has always been very rare in its geographical range and environmental degradation worsens the situation, also because it does not adapt to human presence. It is widespread in southern Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and in the eastern area of the Andes.

The Maned Wolf is found in open and semi-open grasslands, savannahs, and scrub forests in South America, in countries such as Brazil, Paraguay, northern Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru. It does not form packs like wolves do. It hunts alone – it is a solitary animal.
