Aldehydes and ketones show a strong C═O C ═ O bond absorption in the IR region from 1660 to 1770 cm –1, as the spectra of benzaldehyde and cyclohexanone demonstrate (Figure 19.14.1 19.14. 1). In addition, aldehydes show two characteristic C–H absorptions between 2700–2760 and 2800–2860 cm –1.

For simple aldehydes and ketones, the stretching vibration of the carbonyl group has a strong infrared absorption between 1710 and 1740 cm-1. – inductive effect lower the bond strength of C=O ketone carbonyls have slightly lower stretching frequencies, 1715 ± 7 cm-1, compared with aldehydes, 1730 ± 7 cm-1.
